The still smoking peaks of Mount Batur stretch up in the middle
of a huge volcanic crater basin. Long black streams of lava from
recent eruptions stretch down towards the lake below, and curtain
of mist and cloud sweep the basin in ever changing configurations,
causing dramatic disappearances of the whole panorama into gray
nothingness. On the furthest shore of the lake is the isolated Bali
Age (ancient Bali) village of dances where the villages abide by
original Balinese customs. Burial is not practiced there; they
simply lay their dead out in a ravine and leave them
In the 1926 during a violent eruption of this mountain, the original
village of Batur at the southern foot of the mountain was totally
destroyed. The people unharmed but homeless, moved up into the high
ridge overlooking their original homes, and began the task of rebuilding
their temple, pura Ulun Danu. Work on this temple on the island.

One of thousand five hundred meters high, the village of Kintamani has
a cool damp climate suited to growing oranges and passion fruit, and on
market day, which falls every day, the main street become a bustling
chaos of vendors, some of whom have traveled vast distances carrying
their wares on horseback.
Penelokan means "place for looking", and true to its, than the usual
early morning, and a festive atmosphere prevails around the bustling
little stalls with their kerosene lanterns selling beautiful fruit and
produce from all the nearby district. |
A little further Northeast on the coastal road is Yeh Saneh, an
idyllic spot few people know of. Only a few meters from the splash
of the surf is a cool freshwater spring around which has been built
a large pool and garden for bathers and picnickers. |
About 10 kilometers west of the "old town" Singaraja, there lies
a secluded black-sandy Lovina Beach which is peaceful and best
for relaxing. |
The biggest and the most beautiful waterfall on the island
situated in a serene place among coffe and clove plantations. |
The original capital of Bali, Singaraja, is right of the sea,
and its harbor has been the key to local development. A bustling
center local commerce, its people are noisy, open and friendly,

sunsets over the distant outline of Java as the local goats

An attractive mountain resort located about 1100 meters above
sea level. There lies an ancient Lake Beratan with its magnificient
"floating" Ulun Danu Temple dedicated to the goddes of water
dwelling in this area. |
East of Singaraja and slightly island the hills is a small
picturesque village named Sawan, famous for its dancing and
gamelan smith. Sawan considered as a center of art and cultural
activity in Buleleng Regency. |
